The last year or so has been a difficult year in terms of hearing news of AI and layoffs across the entertainment industry. For me, this has meant a lot of internal reflection, trying to answer questions such as what are parts of concept art and design that are still important? What do I want to focus my improvement on? and even a basic question such as what do I like?
So this is the first piece of a portfolio that I am currently working on that I hope helps lead me to more answers about that. I'll keep posting more pieces and try to work out more answers as I finish up more pieces. I wanted to make something that is fun and interesting, as well as use influences from my childhood growing up in Malaysia, such things as seeing drinks packaged in plastic bags tied around poles or fences or seeing those red colour shrines on walls or columns all around. The joy of seeing the little red gacha machines at a "chai diam ma", and even just seeing all the drink options in a vending machine.
With the skills and techniques that I have acquired over working for the last 2 or so years, I felt I could finally push for a project that is not simply limited by my technical skills as well. More pieces will slowly be on their way as well, I'm excited to share what has been a very fun and rewarding personal project to work on, as well as hopefully for people to look at!
